MAKKAH AND MADINA, CITIES THAT UNITE PEOPLE TOGETHER

“Here I am at your service O ALLAH; Here I am at your service”

Pilgrims chanted louder and louder as we moved closer to the object of our desire. A response to an ancient call, an Ibrahamic tradition. Millions of people have been frequenting the Haramain (shelter) for centuries. People come from far and near to worship and have their prayers heard. There's not a tribe, city, country or state that isn't represented in the holy lands. Many Different people with different skin colours eat different foods, talk in different languages, and wear different clothing and practice different social customs all gathered in one place to worship and celebrate peace, unity and brotherhood. The beauty of it, as different as they all are, when the Muazzin raises the call to namaz (prayer), every individual from every state stops whatever they are doing and responds to His call, faces the Holy Kaaba and engages in prayer.

Makkah and Madina both have their own flavours. The fast paced city feel of Makkah is rivalled by the laid back leisure of Madina. Both cities embody a personality which we can feel in your body and in the air. Both are complimentary to each another, each in ideal harmony, yet bear different fruits. Makkah will magnify your deeds 100,000 times, whereas Madina connects you to the greatest being the globe has ever known.Both make you feel secure, privileged, humbled and honoured.

Life can be trying, it can consider a person through a series of many negative experiences and trials that can show to be challenging on the highest level. A trip to the Haramain can afford you the opportunity to reset, rearrange, gain perspective, have a vision or discover a path. All the worries and troubles of the world can be washed away with the blessed water of Zamzam water or with a simple sajda (prostration). A person can reach real euphoria, simply by sitting still and looking at the Holy Kabah or sending Durood upon the Prophet (PBUH).

Verse 9:129 of Holy Quran;

But if they turn away, [O Muhammad], say, "Sufficient for me is ALLAH; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."

This is a place where no one walks away empty-handed. This is a place where kindred souls meet and the not possible is shown to be made possible. This is a place where Tawaaf (Circumambulation) is constant and sujood is the norm. Ask for whatever you desire, whatever your heart wishes. As much as a journey to the Haram is an opportunity to reset, gain clearness and find reason, it can and must also be a launching pad for executing huge deeds and benefit to society at large. We should connect with our religious self and history and ask the ALLAH Almighty to use us to enjoin superior and spread light.
